Phaedra Parks, of Real Housewives of Atlanta, files lawsuit in May 2012 against Vibe and Angela Stanton, writer of “Lies of a Real Housewife: Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil,” for defamation.
In 2012, Angela Stanton did an interview with Vibe about her book, which is a story about her experiences with Phaedra Parks. In this interview, Angela Stanton identifies Phaedra Parks as the mastermind behind Angela Stanton and Apollo Nida’s arrests. Vibe released the three-part video interview, which is being circulated via social media.
Phaedra Parks is an entertainment attorney, who has represented celebrities such as Bobby Brown. Bravo describes Phaedra Parks as a housewife, attorney, and aspiring mortician. Aside from her jobs, Phaedra Parks is the mother of two sons, Ayden and Dylan, and the wife of Apollo Nida.
In the video posted by Vibe, Angela Stanton asserts that Phaedra Parks created a business relationship with Angela. During this relationship, Angela Stanton says “they (Phaedra Parks and Apollo Nida) were re-making fraudulent insurance checks… and this went on for two years.” Angela Stanton also says that they all were involved in a federal racketeering case because they were stealing “Porches, Hummers, Cadillacs, Corvettes, any hot whip (vehicle) at that time, we had it.”
After publication of the articles and videos on Vibe.com and Uptown Magazine, Phaedra Parks’ attorney sent a letter to Vibe requesting a retraction for the statements/ accusations made by Stanton. According to CourtHouse News, the notices were sent on “March 16, 2012 and April 27, 2012 informing defendant that the statements they published in the articles and the book were false and defamatory and demanding that the statements be retracted and corrected” Vibe did not respond to the request. Therefore, Phaedra Parks’ attorney filed a $30 million defamation lawsuit against the publishing company.
North Carolina attorney, Alana Byrd, stated “Parks is going to have to prove that the states were false at the time of the publication or rather Stanton will need to have proof that her statements were the truth.” Byrd continues, “without it, it is likely that Parks would win because of the defamation.” If this case were tried in North Carolina, the case would be defamation because it charges that Parks committed an infamous crime and has the potential to impact her profession.
CourtHouse News says, “Parks seeks trial by jury, more than $5 million in compensatory damages, $25 million in punitive damages, attorney fees and a published retraction of the articles and book.”
In the lawsuit, it states that Angela Stanton posted false and defamatory accusations about Phaedra Parks on “Twitter and otherwise made false and defamatory statements about her to third persons in the community.”
Early reports stated that Parks and Vibe settled out of court. According to Reality TV Magazine, the case has not been settled.
