Shae Archer, the creator of Boi Meets Play, is a blogger who has experienced freedom of the press.
Archer began the website Boi Meets Play after discovering that there was not a lot of mediums for boi culture.
Boi is “a masculine of center person/ female bodied” Archer says. Boi culture is the community built to support these people through their interests in fashion, entertainment, advocacy, and more. Archer says, “the blog was created to help unite people who did not have access to or the means to attend events and connect within this culture.”
According to their Facebook page, Boi Meets Play is “an online magazine for the modern boi, butch, stud, tomboy, masculine-of-center, trans-male, cis-male. Our aim is to promote our version of modern masculinity through various voices and media.”
Since the formation of the blog, Archer has had the opportunity to gain press access to limited viewing screenings, red carpet interviews, and fashion events. Archer explains that the events were a lot of fun for her, especially because she “was able to be a part of the event and report on it in [the] blog.”
Archer has not been denied the Freedom of Press, but rather ignored by community members. Archer explains, “this does not what happens often. But it is funny because after they ignore me, we run into each other at other events which make things… awkward.” “This is a small community, so we are bound to run into each other.” Archer is amongst the group of bloggers that are considered journalists, according to The Atlantic. The Atlantic recently reported that the Federal Court has ruled that bloggers are journalists.
The blogger press badge that Archer has given her access to screening films such as Pariah. Pariah is a coming of age story about a Masculine of Center person who must navigate the challenges of being queer and having to “come out” to their family.
The website has contributing editors, known as the Archer Boiz.
The Archer Boiz, named after the creator’s Sagittarian astrological sign, are a group intelligent, creative, and unique Boiz. The Archer Boiz have the common goal of strengthening the Boi community by creating common ties, providing a support system, and promoting positive & appealing images of the modern masculine of center women.
The Archer Boiz will be out this year, revamping the blog and helping to strengthen the Masculine-of-Center community through events and activities.
